About Silver Jewellery
Silver is a lustrous metal which has been used for millenia to create jewelry pieces and ornamental objects (amongst many other things!) - the metal is malleable and ductile and is therefore very useful and is sculpted easily into intricate shapes and designs. This precious metal is also relatively cheap, and so there are a huge range of fashionable designs available, from simple and elegant to the intricate and unusual, and heavy silver jewelry is more affordable.
With care, you can preserve the gleaming appearance of your silver jewellery for a long time. Because it is quite soft it scratches fairly easily leading to a dull surface, so keep silver articles seperate in order to avoid them rubbing together. It also oxidises with contaminants in the air quite easily, which can cause the metal to discolour. To avoid this, put silver articles in a dry place, away from air, light and dampness. To clean silver, wash it in hot, soapy water, but make sure to dry it thoroughly before putting it away. Do not use abrasives on it. Proprietory cleaning cloths are useful for removing tarnish (oxidisation) from the surface and polishing it up, but keep your cloth in a bag so that it doesn't pick up grit and scratch the metal.
If your silver jewelry does become scratched or discoloured, your jeweller can clean and polish it, and it will look like new again!
